The Great Blue Hole

The Great Blue Hole is a large circular submerged sinkhole off the coast of Belize. It is located on Lighthouse Reef Atoll (70km from Belize City) and is part of the larger Belize Barrier Reef Reserve, which is a World Heritage Site. The hole is over 315m across and 122m deep. Analysis of the cave stalactites show that its formation took place intermittently during periods of lower sea levels, including 150,000, 66,000, 60,000, and 15,000 years ago, after which the cavern flooded. It is a unique place, popular among recreational scuba divers who are drawn by the opportunity to dive this “wonder of the world” in the warm, clear Caribbean waters. The sharks and large number of fish, common at the site, further add to it its lure.

Usually, dive visits to the Great Blue Hole are day trips from resort towns such as San Pedro, Caye Caulker and Hopkins, but the site is also frequented by Live-Aboard vessels on week long dive expeditions from Belize City. The best way to see it however, is from the air. Air charters and tours take about an hour and can be booked though resorts or the local airlines such as Tropic Air.

In 2012, the Discovery Channel ranked the Great Blue Hole of Belize as number one on its list of “The 10 Most Amazing Places on Earth”.
